April showers bring May flowers, and then it’s just a hop skip and a jump until summer! I prefer the spring atmosphere though, the dark skies, not having to squint when you’re outside, the calm before the storm, which is a real thing. I experienced it the other day standing on the front porch just before the sky opened and soaked all of Essex County. But I have a lot of plans this summer, so I need smooth sailing and clear skies ahead please. As preparation for my summer plans I’m going to write out my packing lists; I love packing lists, crossing items off as you Tetris them into your suitcase; my OCD is happy thinking about it.
It seems like a small thing, but I’ve never had a Beach Day; maybe it’s a little crazy considering I live all of 15 minutes from the Lake Erie beach. I’ve explained to Mr. Husband, Jake, considering that’s his name that’s how I will refer to him moving forward; it’s easier. So I’ve explained to Jake I want to do nothing but sit on the beach and soak up the sun’s kisses. Realistically I don’t have the patience to sit all day and do absolutely nothing, so I’ll likely bring my kobo and catch up on some reading. On our honeymoon, I did a lot of reading. I finished Lighthousekeeping (Jeanette Winterson), started and finished Yes Please (Amy Poehler), Scrappy Little Nobody (Anna Kendrick) and Vegas Diaries (Holly Madison). I would recommend all of these books. So this is how I imagine the day, sunny and topless. Just kidding, I don’t think Lake Erie condones toplessness at their beach. I’ve been doing a little tanning to keep my eczema under control (this doesn’t work for everyone) so I look a little like a beach-bum. Oh right! Packing list; kobo, towel, lounging chair, fancy water bottle, cooler with ice and more water, sandals, maybe some shoes. I just purchased a pair of BOBS, first pair of casual shoes I’ve purchased for more than $15.00. Obviously, I need a bathing suit, tanning lotion, maybe some coconut oil, my sunglasses, a hair tie, some cut up fruits that will be kept in the cooler. This is why I can’t go places, I’d take up at least 2000 square feet of space.
I’ve always wanted to have a caricature done. I’m going to an amusement park for this reason and no other because I don’t like roller coasters, their food is overpriced and they never have my name on any of their personalized souvenirs. I’m not sure if all amusement parks provide a caricature service so I’ll have to do some more research. I’d like to go to a water park though. Another excuse to wear a few of the many bathing suits I own now, yes tan lines! Bathing suit, tanning lotion, shorts and an easily removable top, money to purchase the overpriced food and my caricature, and a beach bag to carry my things and Jake’s; realistically he’ll carry it. I don’t plan to need a towel because I’d like the day to be so hot that the water evaporates off of me. If it’s that hot we’ll need to be sure we’re hydrated, I don’t think you can take your own water into the park.
For our “halfiversary” (anniversary half way point. We got married in February so that would-be July) we want to go to Waterloo. I’ve stayed in the Delta there before, it’s beautiful! Why not wait until our actual anniversary to do a weekend away? It’s cold and the roads are bad, February is nice though if you want to go to a resort, the weather is nice in the South in February. If we don’t go for our halfiversary then our birthday. Our birthdays are a week apart in September, but Jake is five years older. Exactly five years and a week. For that trip I’ll need clothes to wear there, and clothes to wear back. I’m hilarious. I’ll also need clothes to go explore the town and go eating and shopping. Comfy shoes, a sweater in case the night is cold, comfortable pants and shirt. That’s all. I’m low maintenance. Jake would disagree though.
Besides that, I’d like to go on a camping trip. We went last summer with the in-laws and we got rain the entire weekend. Jake and I were the only ones sleeping in a tent; this tent was at least 10 years old and riddled with holes so all our things got wet. The weather made for a miserable weekend. I would like to try again though and purchase a tent ourselves. We’ve thought about doing a “friends” camping trip, but I can’t think of anyone I’d want to spend an entire weekend with. So that probably won’t happen. A camping trip just Jake and I would be fun though. Get away from technology and cell phone games would be so nice! I’m really proud of Jake and myself for not having our phones on us when we go on vacations or weekends away. I think we got less than 10 photos of our honeymoon. We may regret not being able to flip through a photobook and look at the photos, but let’s be real; who keeps photobooks and most photos people take on vacation are of their legs on the beach or selfies. I’m okay just keeping the memories. Packing List for any camping trip would include a new tent, two separate air mattresses, lots of blankets, two floor mats, an air freshener, garbage bags for the dirty clothes, shorts, sweaters, pants, shirts, bathing suits, underwear, socks, flipflops, shoes, hair brush, hair ties, cooler, water, alcohol, food (hamburgers, hotdogs, steak, pancakes, eggs, bacon), tarp to hang between trees for shade, maybe a BBQ, marshmallows and roasting sticks, chocolate and graham crackers, toiletries, a book, deck of cards, a cooler, flashlights, firewood, lighter, cutlery and other kitchen things. That’s all I can think of. I wonder if Jake were to make the packing list what it would look like. Tent, sleeping bag, food, fishing gear, alcohol, bikes. I asked, that’s what he said.
